Sculpture goes underground at the Caves for the second time with this exhibition of modern and contemporary sculpture, curated by Rungwe Kingdon and Claude Koenig. Taking its theme of colour from the ochre mined at the Caves since Neolithic times, it will feature works by over fifty British and international modern and contemporary artists.
Visitors to the exhibition will follow a planned route – 550 metres long and up to 100ft below ground – where they will encounter sculptures, including several new site-specific works, and have a chance to explore the mine.
A journey through colour, form and materials in an exhibition of Modern and contemporary sculpture, inspired by 5,000 years of colour mining at Clearwell Caves.
The 70 artworks by 60 international artists on show transition from monochrome black and white, through earth colours, primaries and metallic tones into dazzling technicolour. 16 of the pieces were created especially for the exhibition, several have never been shown before, and some will not be seen again.
Artists taking part range from post-war pioneers Lynn Chadwick, Geoffrey Clarke and William Tucker, through to Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Polly Morgan, Tavares Strachan, Monira Al Qadiri, Ann Christopher, Merete Rasmussen, and Peter Oloya. The full list will be announced soon.
This amazing sculpture exhibition is included with your ‘Cave Entry‘ tickets purchased for dates between 23rd May to 31st August 2025. Online booking highly recommended.
